The secluded Bale Mountains are some of the most unspoiled and exceptionally beautiful in the country. The peaks here rise more than 4000 meters, and Mount Tullu Deemtu, with an altitude of 4,377 meters above sea level, is the second-highest peak in Ethiopia.
This tour is a wonderful trekking opportunity for those who seek a unique trekking experience in the isolated mountains of Ethiopia. Trekking in the Bale Mountains gives the trekker the chance to interact with the local community and witness their culture and way of life.
Itinerary
Day 1: Addis Ababa
Arrive at the Addis Ababa airport and be welcomed by a Grand Holidays Ethiopia Tours representative and transferred to your hotel.
Overnight: Hotel, Addis Ababa
Day 2: Addis Ababa, Ethiopian Rift Valley, Dinsho
After breakfast, drive through the Ethiopian Great Rift Valley enroute enjoying the beautiful Rift Valley lakes and spectacular mountain scenery.
For the rest of the day, walk through the juniper forest and explore the area with high concentrations of the Bale Mountains Nayal, Menelik's Bushbuck, and other mammals.
Overnight: Camping at Dinsho
Day 3: Dinsho, Geysay Valley, Dinsho (3250m)
Trekking time: 5–6 hours
Trek to Geysay Valley, the northerly extension of the park. Here, while trekking in the indigenous forest, it’s possible to spot the endemic Menelik's Bushbuck, Mountain Nyala, Ethiopian Wolf, and other mammals.
Overnight: Camping at Dinsho
Day 4: Dinsho, Weib Valleys, Finch Abera
Trekking time: ~6 hours
Trek and pass through the lovely Weib Valley, and finally reach the beautiful waterfall of Finch Abera.
Overnight: Camping
Day 5: Finch Abera, Merero, Wasmea
Trekking time: 8 hours
Trek beneath the peaks of Merero, see and taste the strange mineral springs before making the steep ascent out of the valley onto the Senetie Plateau.
Overnight: Camping
Day 6: Wasama Valley, Batu, Garba Guracha Lake
Trekking time: 9 hours
Climb Batu (4203 m), and then trek on across the arms of the Batu horseshoe to a camp beside lovely Garba Guracha Lake — set beneath towering cliffs at the head of the Tegona Valley.
Overnight: Camping at Garba Guracha
Day 7: Garba Guracha, Konthe, Goba
Trekking time: 3 hrs
Trek across the plateau enjoying the stunning highland scenery full of small lakes, and the reach at the peak of Konthe (4100m). Then drive to Goba.
Overnight: Wabe Shebele Hotel
Day 8: Goba, Wendogenet
In the morning, drive to Wondogent. For the rest of the day, enjoy a relaxing trek in the forested mountains.
Overnight: Hotel, Wendogenet
Day 9: Wendogenet, Addis Ababa
After breakfast, drive back to Addis Ababa. For the rest of the day, take a city tour of Addis Ababa. End of tour.
