Awash National Park and Harar

The Awash National Park

Lying in the lowlands east of Addis Ababa and astriding the Awash River, the Awash National Park is one of the finest reserves in Ethiopia. The Awash River, one of the major rivers of the horn of Africa, waters important agricultural lands in the north of Ethiopia and eventually flows into the wilderness of the Danakil Depression. The dramatic Awash Falls, where the river tumbles into a gorge, is a sight not to be missed. Awash National Park, surrounding the dormant volcano of Fantale, is a reserve of arid and semi-arid woodland and savannah, with riverain forests along the Awash River. Forty six species of animals have been identified here, including Beisa Oryx and Swayne's Heartbeest. The birdlife is prolific, especially along the

     
       
 
 
   
   
   
 

river and at nearby Lake Basaka. There are fine endemic amongst the 392 species recorded. A special attraction is the beautiful clear pools of the Filwoha hot springs. Further east is the ancient, walled Islamic city of Harer, with its 99 mosques, said by Muslims to be the fourth holiest city in the world. The itinerary below combines these two ttractions with camel caravan and Afar Village.

Option one

Transportations: Surface

Day 01. Addis Ababa city tour, the view from Mount Entoto, the National and Ethnographic Museum, Trinity Church, the Mercato. O/n Addis Ababa.
Day 02. We drive south, stopping at Nazareth for lunch. Afternoon game drive in park, visit to Awash River and Awash Falls. O/n Nazareth.
Day 03. Full day in park; visit to Fentale crater and to Filwoha hot springs. O/n Nazareth.
Day 04. Leave for Harer, passing through the Arba Gugu Mountains. O/n Harer
Day 05. Full day city tour of Harer, markets and museums. O/n Harer
Day 06. Excursion to the valley of marvels and to the market of Jijiga. O/n Harer.
Day 07. Transfer to Dire Dawa for flight back to Addis, souvenir shopping farewell dinner with national music and dancing. O/n Addis Ababa.

Awash, Afar and Harar Itinerary
Option two

Day 01. Addis Ababa city tour, the view from Mount Entoto, the National and Ethnographic Museum, Trinity Church, the Mercato. O/n Addis Ababa.
Day 02. We drive south, stopping at Nazareth for lunch. Afternoon game drive in park, visit to Awash River and Awash Falls. O/n Blien Lodge.
Day 03. In the morning, we will visit the other part of the park; visit to Fentale Crater Lake and to Filwoha hot springs. In the afternoon, we will make camel caravan and visit for the Afar Village to experience their nomadic life style. O/n Blien Lodge.
Day 04. Leave for Harer, passing through the Arba Gugu Mountains. O/n Harer
Day 05. Visit the ancient walled city of Harar and the surrounding area. In the evening, we will see the “Hyna Man” feeding the wildebeest. O/n Harar.
Day 06. Drive from Harar to Nazreth and relax in the natural hotspring at Sodere. O/n Awash.
Day 07. After hving relaxing morning swimming and breakfast we will drive back to Addis Ababa and in the afternoon souvenir shopping and at leisure.

• Activities for the first and last days will depend on visitors’ times of arrivals and departures and airline used.
